On Thursday 11 April, patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and local charities gathered in Riverside Stadium for a day of connection and empowerment at Thrive with brainstrust in Middlesbrough. In this article, we delve into our experiences throughout the day and how everyone left with a sense of empowerment, optimism, and readiness to tackle what lies ahead.
The day started at 09:30 with both the brainstrust and the healthcare professional teams at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust welcoming attendees with cuppas and biscuits. It was heartening to witness participants enjoying the chance to converse with others facing similar circumstances and deriving strength from the bonds formed.
Sarah Morter, MA, RGN, was the first speaker, delivering a talk on the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist team and the Allied Health Professionals team. The talk was very informative and attendees were given a chance to ask questions. Find out more about what clinicians can help you with here.
Middlesbrough Thrive was a special event – full of warm, supportive and enthusiastic people both from our patient and caregiver community and also members of local clinical teams. Getting everyone together to share our experience and knowledge is invaluable and something we were grateful to have the opportunity to organise. – Adam, Patient Involvement Officer and Impact Lead
Next, it was Adam, our Patient Involvement Officer and Impact Lead’s turn to discuss involving patients in the research strategy. You can read more about PRIME here. Then it was time for a
coaching workshop – living with uncertainty – which was hosted by Mariel, one of our Support Specialists. Patients and caregivers exchanged their experiences and tips on managing the uncertainty associated with having a brain tumour.
The event was informative, informal and great to get like-minded people together. Please come again. – Healthcare professional
Following that, it was time for a casual buffet lunch. Attendees had the opportunity to chat with one another while indulging in delicious food. Later, some participants embarked on a stadium tour, while others had a chat in the room. There was also some time to check out the resources that the Beyond Recovery Project had brought.
Caroline Barber-Miller, Specialist Occupational Therapist in Neuro-Oncology, delivered a talk about managing fatigue. She encouraged discussion and she also took the time to speak to attendees individually. More info on how to manage fatigue here. After the talks, there was ample time to explore resources and engage in conversations with each other about the day, their experiences, and simply enjoy some good conversation.
