On 24th May, patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals came together in Liverpool for the first of our ‘Thrive with brainstrust’ wellbeing events.
Taking place at the Mercure Atlantic Tower Hotel, a stone’s throw from the breath-taking Royal Liver Building and River Mersey, it was a brilliant day of brain tumour-focused talks and workshops for the local community.
Following introductions from brainstrust’s Support Specialists – Rosie (Liverpool), Mariel (North of England) and Jodie (Midlands) – our programme started with a fantastically informative session of talks from The Walton Centre’s neurosurgeons and an oncologist from Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. Mr Andrew Brodbelt, Dr Chloë May, Professor Michael Jenkinson, and Mr Rasheed Zakaria covered a wide range of topics in an engaging and accessible way; from introducing brain tumours, to speaking about treatment, and what an oncologist does, plus clinical trials and the research landscape in Liverpool.
“A very well organised, interesting and fascinating day; and so nice to meet others with brain tumours of other types and share experiences” – Patient
The Q&A panel afterwards, was a great chance to spend time with people in such demand in their day jobs. The audience had a chance to have their questions answered, and a safe space to share queries. We’re so grateful to the consultants for taking time out of their busy schedules to be with us.
Next up, a tasty lunch in the restaurant overlooking the Pier Head, before an afternoon of holistic wellbeing sessions.
“I know we all got a lot out if it, wherever we are on the ‘journey’” – Caregiver
Our coaching workshops here at brainstrust are a valued avenue of support. They help people to build resilience and learn effective strategies to help cope with challenges. Mariel and Rosie led a session about living with uncertainty, and there were some poignant and relatable reflections made. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and experiences.
“Witnessing a warm, tender moment when a patient reached out to another to introduce themselves and tell them they are not alone – that was priceless. This is what brainstrust is all about. I honestly can’t wait for the next event!” – Mariel, brainstrust Support Specialist
Before the end of the day, people chose to either wind down or be inspired and energised. Attendees joined a calming meditation session from Karen Podesta, of More Love Yoga and Meditation. Meanwhile others enjoyed a confidence workshop by Emily Turnbull, from The Brain Charity.
A big thank you to all our speakers and workshop-leaders, plus the venue – we couldn’t have run the event without you. Equally, thank you to everyone who came along and spent the day with us; it was lovely to meet you and we hope you enjoyed it!
Thrive with brainstrust in Liverpool was the first in our series of wellbeing events this year. The next is in Brighton on Friday 9th June, with more following suit throughout the summer. Head here for more info, and to learn about our online webinars and meetup groups.
“After 3 years of running our events exclusively online, it was amazing to be able to meet members of our community face to face. The agenda was varied and relevant and reflected the joy of local. I feel honoured to have been part of this event.” – Jodie, Head of Support.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund and players of The National Lottery for supporting us.
