The Children’s Funeral Fund launches today
It isn’t right that parents, already suffering the immeasurable pain of losing a child, should face worries about affording their funeral. So a few months ago, we joined forces with CLIC Sargent and other charities in the campaign to get a Children’s Funeral Fund. You can read the letter that was sent to Parliament here.
Today, the Fund has been officially launched. It is very overdue, but now, parents will no longer have to pay to give their child a proper funeral.
Who is eligible for the Children’s Funeral Fund?
The Fund is to help to pay for the costs of a funeral for a child under 18 or a baby stillborn after the 24th week of pregnancy. It is not means-tested, everybody is eligible for the fund regardless of income or savings. The burial or cremation must take place in England.
What does the Children’s Funeral Fund cover?
Burial fees and cremation fees, including the cost of a doctor’s certificate. It also covers the cost of a coffin, shroud or casket, up to £300.
How do people claim from the Fund?
The fees for the burial or cremation can be claimed directly by the burial or cremation provider – families should not be charged. If families are not using a funeral director they can claim through the Fund. Claims must be made within 6 months of the funeral.
