brainstrust has signed a letter that warns the government that the welfare reform bill in its existing guise will leave tens of thousands of cancer patients (brain tumour and brain cancer patients included) worse off, with the risk of some of these people being pushed into poverty, just because they are poorly.
We are most worried about the fact that the bill as it stands will mean a withdrawal of Employment Support Allowance from many cancer patients after a year. We know that most of our brain tumour patients really do want to return to work, and are trying their very best to do so, but recovery is not quick, often taking longer than a year. The withdrawal of this allowance will push many people into poverty simply because they don’t get better quickly enough.
So far today the letter, signed by an unprecedented alliance of 30 leading national cancer charities has made headline news on Radio 2, Radio 4, and the Guardian.
With all this noise, let’s hope the governement listens.
