The Inaugural Jim Woods Memorial Ride
“A great ride in memory of a great man” is how one Alton Cycling Club member described the Jim Woods Memorial Ride.
The inaugural Jim Woods Memorial Ride took place on Sunday 10th July. The ride was organised by John Heath in memory of club member Jim Woods who sadly died of a brain tumour in 2020, and who is fondly remembered by many.
In memory of Jim Woods
Jim was a keen Club Cyclist joining ACC in 2010 on his return from France. Always good company on and off the bike, Jim loved cycle touring, Sunday club rides, and all things social. It was no surprise that he made such a great Publicity Secretary.
Jim was diagnosed in September 2018 with a malignant brain tumour and sadly passed away in April 2020. He is hugely missed by his many friends and family. His gentle humour and keen intellect live on in the memories of all who knew him.
The day of the ride
The ride began on Sunday morning with the team enjoying excellent weather and quiet lanes. For many at the club this was their first ever Audax ride, and the first organised by Alton Cycling Club since 2006, and it was a great success!
The first mile out of Beech Village Hall was uphill, a tough start which really kicked the legs into action, followed by a rolling ride alongside clear fast-flowing chalk streams, through beautiful, thatched cottage villages, to the lovely Leckford Estate in Longstock. Cakes, coffee, smiling faces and water top-ups welcomed the riders, while they cooled down under the trees.
After fuelling up, the group headed back with the wind direction in their favour. After one last push up to Medstead with a speedy downhill to Beech, the riders were greeted by many homemade cakes, rolls and refreshments.
Considering the warm weather, the team of 60 friendly cyclists completed an impressive 100km and raised an incredible £773.31 for brainstrust!
Alton Cycling Club are looking forward to organising this as an annual Audax event from now on. The next ride will take place on Sunday 9th July 2023. We cannot wait!
