The Paediatric Brain Tumour Symposium 2019
Another year and another successful Paediatric Brain Tumour Symposium, this year we organised the event with The Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre (CBTRC). We had great charity collaboration with speakers from brainstrust, CBTRC and Brain Tumour Research.
Our event bought together health care professionals, consultants, researchers, charitable organisations, young adults impacted by a brain tumour, families and caregivers to learn about progress being made across many fronts in the work against paediatric brain tumours.
We had a wide range of talks from speakers from our community including Stephen Frost and Nicolas Vinogradov-Wouters. Stephen shared his experience as a parent of a child undergoing treatment for a brain tumour and Nicolas shared his experience as a young adult who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in his teens.
“Honestly such a great experience and I’m so grateful you let me talk and share my experience. Hope I was able to help a few people showing that you can make it through!” – Nicolas
What we talked about
Leading research by clinicians and researchers was presented, including talks on cannabinoids, the ketogenic diet, acceptance and commitment therapy for children and upcoming research on medulloblastoma and ependymoma.
We had allied healthcare professionals working directly with teenagers and children with a brain tumours speak for us. They covered topics like managing fatigue, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and proton beam therapy.
“It was amazing to have so many parents in the room alongside healthcare professionals who were keen to answer questions and listen to parent’s stories. This event has grown year on year and we hope to continue to provide families with this opportunity to learn all they can and meet other parents. Feedback from this year was excellent, and we will use the lessons learnt to make next year bigger and better for our community.” Khadijha, support specialist for children and families
We covered a wide range of topics to suit a wide demographic of people who attended.
