“If my Grandad could battle a brain tumour for 2 years, there’s no reason I can’t battle the Atlantic for 3 months”
British soldier Jack Jarvis has officially become the first person in history to row from mainland Europe to mainland North America – and he’s done it all for Isle of Wight based charity brainstrust.
The challenge – dubbed ‘United We Conquer’ – was taken on in memory of his late grandfather, who he sadly lost to a brain tumour in 2007. So far, the military man has raise an incredible £57,000, surpassing his initial target of £50,000, and donations are still pouring in. During the row, Jack has received motivational messages from the likes of David Beckham, Gary Neville, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
The row start on Friday 3rd December in Portugal when Jarvis set out on ‘Budgie’, a boat named after his grandfather, to complete an average 50 nautical miles a day totally unsupported. After more than 110 days at sea, Jack arrived on the shores of South Florida earlier today, docking in at Riviera Marina in West Palm Beach.
When talking about completing the challenge, Jarvis said:
“I’m so pleased that I was able to raise such a huge amount of money for brainstrust. It really is a fantastic charity and one that helps so many people who are suffering with a brain tumour, as well as their families. I know my grandad would be so proud of what I’ve achieve and I thought about him every single day of the row.”
As the team at brainstrust celebrates Jack’s achievement, Will Jones, CEO of brainstrust, said:
“This record setting row shows what can be possible when you have the spirit, determination, and belief that something can be achieved. All impactful charities are born of an indomitable strength of belief that a wrong can be righted. Jack has inspired us all at brainstrust, and in the brain tumour community. He has given us resolve in our belief that if we lean in, keep working hard and look out for one another that every day lived with a brain tumour can be a day well-lived. Jack – thank you for your support, for taking brainstrust on your journey and for smashing this record with the brain tumour community front and centre. We are proud of you, and we hope Budgie, wherever he is, will be too. Every penny raised by this incredible mission will go towards helping people with a brain tumour to be less alone, less afraid and more in control and to give them the spirit and strength of belief that every day lived can be the best day possible.”
Everyone here at brainstrust is completely blown away by Jack’s tenacious spirit and determination throughout his challenge. We’ve been cheering him on every nautical mile and we’re incredibly grateful for the support he’s received. The money Jack will help us continue in our mission to ensure that no one living with a brain tumour has to face their journey alone.
