Morning all! Well it looks as though Chris and Jason are making steady progress down through India on their bikes. They’ve some fantastic updates on their site, journeytothepoint.com. We mentioned this adventure in an earlier post, so for background click here, but be sure to take a look at their blog updates, their journey sounds amazing, and the people they’re meeting equally so. Here’s an extract from Chris’s latest update:
“That afternoon we cycled through some fairly steep hills which were my first big challenge in a while. We both commented that the lush green scenery with the wet black soil would probably look very different at any other time of year. We were getting used to the rain and the Western Ghat mountains ahead of us shrouded in mist were truly impressive. At nightfall the road deteriorated, the batteries on my front light went and we had another 20 km to go to Jog Falls, the town of Gersoppa (Golsoppe) was our only option.
However, except for the KTC guesthouse (which looked very nice but for members only), there was no hotel at all in town. Going up a small side road up to where we were told there was a temple, we both felt we were being slightly led on a wild goose chase, however temple there was and being marginally intrigued by the sight of two drenched foriegners on cyclocross bikes doing a charity ride, they decided to take us in. We were treated very well – mats to sleep on in the temple hall, a place to shower and some good veg sustenance. It turned out that the temple was a major pilgrimage site and the head priest some kind of Hindu spiritual medium. I got to meet him, very intelligent and at 30 years of age younger than me, I need to do better in my career! The deity of the temple was the monkey god and they were making big preparations that weekend for his birthday in March next year. They really wanted us to stay longer, but we felt really bad knowing we had to keep going the next day.”
Keep at it guys!
