Richard Broadhead successfully completed the Virgin London Marathon for brainstrust! It was his first marathon; Richard says:
It certainly was an incredible experience. I was excited and nervous in the weeks building up to the race, as there is so much unknown, but I felt well prepared and ready to go on the start line. Thank you for your emails and good wishes prior to the race – they were very much appreciated and helped me focus on what I was doing and why I was doing it. Whilst I wanted the race to be “fun”, if you can call a marathon fun, I also put myself under considerable pressure to achieve a rather ambitious target time. For my first marathon I was targeting a 4 hour finish.
Well, I managed to execute my race strategy almost to perfection…nutrition and fuelling was good, my pace was very steady and controlled, and my cardio felt strong. All good through to around 23 miles and then it certainly got tough from there! But, I crossed the line with a smile on my face in…….
4 Hours: 00 minutes: 53 seconds!
Delighted with that 🙂 Shame about those extra 53 seconds – but I hit the time almost on the button. I think if I’d finished in under 4 hours I might have retired immediately in a blaze of glory. Now, however, I may just have to try to run for another 26 miles just to lose those extra 53 seconds!
CONGRATULATIONS RICHARD!
