9 July marked the second annual Jim Woods Memorial Bike Ride. Hosted by Alton Cycling club, the ride was established in 2022 in memory of club member, Jim Woods, who sadly died of a brain tumour in 2020. Now in it’s second year the memorial ride continues to grow, raising an amazing £1,000 for brainstrust. We’ve caught up with organiser, John Heath, to learn more about Jim and how this year’s ride went.
My friend Jim died in 2020 from a brain tumour. Jim was not only a good friend to me, but a very active and popular member of Alton Cycling Club, serving for some years as a committee member and a very effective publicity secretary. I’ve been involved in Audax events for many years and it seemed that a ride in the superb Hampshire countryside, in which Jim road so often, would be a fitting memorial to his memory.
This year’s ride was a great success, with numbers up significantly, 89 entries this year from 72 in 2022. Once again, we had fine weather and an incident free event. There were many complimentary comments from the riders about the beauty of the very rural course and the warmth of the hospitality from Alton Cycling Club, not least for the excellent catering at the finish supplied and funded by Jim’s wife Wendy. I am also very grateful to the staff at The Waitrose Farm Café in Leckford for allowing the riders to have exclusive use of the Cherry Tree outdoor café for refreshments at the halfway control.
It was a great pleasure for me personally to be able to organise this event for the second year. Alton Cycling Club supported this event wholeheartedly, by making a significant donation from club funds, by supplying the marshals and controllers and by riding the event – a third of the riders were ACC members. When I first mooted the idea of a memorial ride in Jim’s memory it was Wendy Woods who suggested that we should raise money for brainstrust, a suggestion that I was only too happy to embrace. I hope that our efforts have made a difference in some small way.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to John, Alton Cycling Club and everyone who participated for making the event such a success and for raising such a fantastic total for brainstrust. Your support helps us continue to be there for people after a brain tumour diagnosis, helping them live their best life possible.
