When Suzanne’s dad was diagnosed with primary small cell lung cancer that had spread to his brain, life changed forever. After he sadly passed away on 21st September 2023, Suzanne was determined to honour his memory in a way that reflected their shared love of adrenaline-fuelled adventures. One item high on his bucket list was Wing Walking — so Suzanne decided to take to the skies, not only to tick it off in his honour but also to raise vital funds for brainstrust, a charity close to her heart.
In Suzanne’s own words:
brainstrust is a charity close to my heart because my dad was diagnosed with primary small cell lung cancer which had spread to his brain, sadly on the 21st September 2023 my dad passed away.
We enjoyed doing many different adrenaline challenges together and Wing Walking was high up on his list! He inspired me to carry on with his bucket list and to raise money for charity in tow, so it seemed extremely fitting for me to do this for brainstrust.
For starters I personally booked the Wing Walk and then set up my JustGiving page and contacted brainstrust for their help to get posters of which I displayed in my workplace etc, and they sent me a neck scarf so I could wear this on the day. I shared this on social media on a regular basis, sent emails to work colleagues around pay day which seemed to help, you’ve got to be tactical!
I didn’t feel nervous until I got to the airfield on the day of my Wing Walk. I tried to share as much of my journey as possible to try and increase donations. I did a video of me pretending I had wings, added music and again popped this onto social media. My husband and mum were there to be my cheerleaders they watched from the viewing platform whilst I got myself positioned onto the wing of the plane. I was extremely nervous and tried shuffling my feet around to get comfortable, I remember thinking I’m just stood on a plane doing a Wing Walk nothing to be afraid of I’m all strapped in. We set off heading towards the viewing platform and my adrenaline starting to kick in I did all sorts of funny actions with my arms and blew kisses to my family then it struck me why I was doing this the and the one person I wanted here wasn’t! It was quite emotional but also exciting at the same time.
Once we took flight all my nerves seemed to calm and I was at ease, it was such a fantastic and surreal feeling to feel so free and to enjoy the scenery below. The weather conditions were perfect, sunshine galore. I was a bit shaky dissembling from the plane, but the adrenaline was pumping through my body, and I felt fantastic! This has got to be one of the top experiences I have done! And I’d do it again tomorrow would even love to do a loop the loop!
It’s quite sad as once you start talking to people and explain what you’re doing and why as they can relate to you as they either have a family member or know someone who has gone or is going through brain cancer.
My mission was to raise as much money as I can and if I could just inspire one person to take on a challenge or raise awareness of this heart-breaking disease then my job is done. Don’t put it off set yourself a challenge and once completed its truly humbling knowing that you’ve helped.
Suzanne has raised an incredible £785.00 – enough to fund 19 brain boxes. The brain box is a must have support toolkit for people with a new brain tumour diagnosis and their caregivers. Fully customisable, with resources relevant to your unique situation, the brain box also comes with treats like teabags and self-care items.
