Neurosurgical Trainee Mr Ahmad Ali has been awarded a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Doctoral Fellowship, to continue vital research assessing the extent of cognitive problems suffered by patients with brain tumours. This includes exploring an exciting device (TMS) that might help with cognitive rehabilitation. Mr Ali incorporated patient views supplied by brainstrust into his PhD submission.
Mr Ali said to Helen Bulbeck at brainstrust “I just wanted to thank you sincerely for your help in getting patient input for the design of my PhD project. The patient input data I collected with your support has allowed me to publish a paper on patient perceptions about TMS and also secure an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship award to undertake my project.”
Mr Ali’s research will look into the potential role of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in treating brain tumours. TMR is a non-invasive technique commonly used for depression and other neurological conditions. TMR uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain. It is a safe and effective treatment option for various mental health conditions, including depression. If successful, the findings of this new research can potentially be extended to other neurosurgical patient groups.
Helen Bulbeck brainstrust founder and Director of Services and Policy commented, “we’re delighted that Mr Ali has been awarded an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship; it’s been a privilege to support his valuable and impactful research which will make a difference for people living with a brain tumour. This success demonstrates how important it is to bring patients closer to research and research to patients. It makes the research relatable and meaningful for the person living with the disease”.
