Meet Joe Wallace – an incredible supporter of brainstrust who has set himself an amazing challenge: to walk the equivalent distance from John O’Groats to Land’s End before his 91st birthday in July 2026!
Joe began this journey on 6th July 2025 – the day he turned 90! A passionate walker, Joe never misses his 10,000 steps a day, come rain or shine. His routes often take him along the Eynesbury St Neots pathway and other local trails he knows well. It was during one of these daily walks that Joe was inspired to take on something even bigger – a challenge that would not only keep him moving but also make a difference to others. Joe is fundraising for five charities close to his heart, including brainstrust, and aims to raise £12,000 to share between them.
In Joe’s own words:
When thinking of charities to support we had recently lost my wife Jean’s brother John, to Glioblastoma, bringing our attention to Brain related disease and injury. Another close family member, our nephew, Professor Andrew Bateman, is a global leader in Neuro Psychology based at the University of Essex and Chair of the UK Brain Injury Forum and this year launched the Brain Injury Social Care Network (an NIHR Incubator). He specialises in brain trauma rehabilitation and is President of the International Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Neurology.
As a result of John’s illness, we became more aware of Andrew’s work and brain related trauma (whether through injury or disease) in general, so it was an obvious choice as one of my five chosen charities, as a means to help improve the care pathway of those afflicted. As a result, in my own small way, I will feel I have not only honoured John’s memory but contributed to further research and support for sufferers in the future.
If Joe averages 2.4 miles a day, he will complete his trek on 6th July 2026. While most of the walk will be virtual, the final 15 miles or so will be completed by walking into Land’s End.
Joe will be posting regular updates along the way, and if you’re local, why not join him for one of his daily walks? https://joe90walk.co.uk/
