What started as a simple response to the Covid lockdown has grown into a much-loved annual tradition for Lorna, bringing together her passion for gardening and fundraising. Since 2020, her Plant Sale has become a fixture in the local calendar, eagerly anticipated each year by friends and the local community alike.

Read Lorna’s story below to find out more about their inspiring fundraising journey.

Since 2020 when Garden Centres were closed due to Covid restrictions, I have held an annual outdoor charity Plant Sale. It has become a tradition, and I am now asked early in the year “what is the date for this year!’’

Each year I also choose a charity challenge and the money raised at the plant sale goes towards my fundraising total. This year my charity challenge is the brainstrust Follow the Seagulls walk in Fife and therefore my plant sale money will go towards brainstrust.

I also have a personal reason for supporting the charity. My sister-in-law was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010 and more recently a good friend’s husband was diagnosed with a glioblastoma. Both diagnoses were devasting and scary and I can only imagine how reassuring and helpful a charity like brainstrust can be to families facing such a situation.

This year’s Plant Sale in May was luckily a dry and quite warm day and was well supported by friends and locals. There was even a queue for the 10am opening! In early spring I divide my own herbaceous plants, sow vegetable seeds and gather donated plants from friends so by the time of the sale a good collection is gathered. The vegetable seeds are a bit more unpredictable due to the spring weather which this year was quite cold, so the plants were a bit small!

Overall, it was an enjoyable and sociable morning raising £350.00 and as importantly awareness for brainstrust.

Thank you to Lorna for their wonderful support of brainstrust, and for the time, care and generosity put into this successful fundraiser.
