Sunday 23rd June saw the first showing of this new event for brainstrust. Organised by our own Fundraising Events Manager Ash Hawkins, the brainstrust Bass Belle 10k proved a real success for runners young and old who took on the course in the picturesque village of Bassingbourn.
The event had a limit of 325 runners and all places were snapped up well before the closing date! The event is one of the charities ‘Take on 10 for brain tumours’ series which includes the brainstrust Bass Belle 10 miler and numerous third party events that the charity supports
including the Asics 10k, The Great South Run, Glasgow and Edinburgh 10k series and Run Thorpe 10k.
Race day was hot, but that did not deter the runners who all completed the course in impressive times. The race winner was Alexander Nelson from Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics Club in a time of 34m 55s and the first lady home was Sharon Warren from the
same club in a time of 42m 15s. This new event was open to runners aged 15 and over and the under 18 category was highly competitive with Murray Heal first home in 41.12 for the boys and Eloise Button the under 18 girls champion in a time of 51.58.
The money raised from the event is still being counted but so far, the event has raised over £14k for brainstrust. As well as paying to enter, brainstrust had a team of around 20 runners fundraising for the charity who between them raised around £5k for the charity. On the day
the biggest cheer was for the last runner home, Andrea Moore, who was the highest fundraiser at the event, raising an amazing £1,500.
Ash Hawkins said “It was a great first showing for this new event. As well as raising crucial funds for brainstrust, the event also helped to raise awareness for the charity.
The event brought the whole community out with many clapping and cheering from their doorsteps or
coming to the finish line to show their support for the runners” The brainstrust Bass Belle 10 miler will be back for a 9 th time on Sunday 24 th November and entries will be opening mid-July.
