SUMMARY:Help shape an early clinical trial for vestibular schwannoma
DESCRIPTION:Background\nPRIME by brainstrust is supporting researchers who are taking the very first steps towards testing a potential new drug treatment for sporadic vestibular schwannoma (VS). \nThe first study being planned is very early stage and would involve just six people who are already due to have surgery. It will explore the safety of the treatment\, how it behaves in the body and its effects within the tumour. While this is a small first study\, what researchers learn could help determine whether the treatment progresses to larger studies. \nAt this early stage\, there are important decisions still to be made. Researchers want to hear from people affected by VS about whether the proposed study feels acceptable\, what would matter when deciding whether to take part\, and what a future treatment would need to achieve to make a meaningful difference. \nWho can get involved?\nWe are looking for people living with a sporadic vestibular schwannoma\, as well as caregivers\, family members and loved ones. \nNo previous research experience is needed. We simply ask that you bring your own experiences and perspectives. \nWhat will you do?\nJoin a 90-minute online workshop with brainstrust to help shape the proposed research. \nWe’ll explore how you feel about taking a new treatment before planned surgery\, when it is not yet known whether it will benefit you; what side effects and practical demands feel acceptable; and what you would most want a future treatment to achieve. \nThis will be a small\, informal conversation with no scientific knowledge needed. DESCRIPTION:Background\nResearchers are developing new approaches to treating diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). \nThe research is still at an early\, preclinical stage\, meaning potential approaches are being developed and tested in the laboratory and are not yet treatments being offered to children. \nThe research team is now considering the next stages of this work. Before their plans are developed further\, PRIME by brainstrust is supporting them to work in partnership with families affected by DIPG to understand what matters to families and what researchers should be considering as the research develops. \nWho can get involved?\nWe are looking for: \n\nParents and caregivers with experience of supporting a child or young person affected by DIPG\, including those who are bereaved\nNo previous research experience is needed- we simply ask that you bring your own experiences and perspectives\n\nWhat will you do?\nJoin a 90-minute online workshop with brainstrust to help shape this early research. \nWe’ll explore what families would want researchers to consider when developing new approaches to treatment\, including how treatments are given\, how frequently they might need to be given\, what this could mean for children and families day to day\, and what might make a potential approach more or less acceptable. \nBecause this research is still at a very early stage\, we won’t be asking you to assess a finished treatment or clinical trial. SUMMARY:Managing Scanxiety with Neuroscience Informed Hypnotherapy - online session
DESCRIPTION:Explore the neuroscience behind feelings of anticipation and uncertainty and find practical techniques that can help interrupt the cycle. \nFor many people living with a brain tumour\, the period before scans or results can be one of the most emotionally demanding parts of the journey. This experience is often referred to as ‘scanxiety’. \n‘Scanxiety’ reflects the way the brain responds to anticipation and uncertainty. When the brain predicts potential threat\, attention can become locked onto worry\, sleep may be disrupted and the body may remain in a heightened state of alert. \nThis session explores the neuroscience behind these responses and introduces practical techniques that can help interrupt the cycle. \nUsing guided hypnosis\, breathwork and simple psycho sensory techniques\, participants learn how to redirect attention\, ease stress responses and create more mental space during the waiting period. \nThe aim is to provide gentle\, practical tools that support steadiness during the emotional ups and downs that often accompany ongoing medical monitoring.  \nProgramme Participation \nThis workshop is primarily designed for new attendees who would like to learn the core skills of the programme. Previous participants are very welcome to revisit the workshop as a refresher\, and many find returning once a quarter helpful for reinforcing their learning. DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to put down a few words here or there. \nLed by Andrew Kauffmann\, discover writing for pleasure\, when writing might support us personally\, and where it can bring a sense of solidarity\, purpose or hope. This gentle and paced introduction to writing will cover why we might write\, the stories we might want to write or tell\, and the evidence that writing might be good for our wellbeing. There will be a couple of gentle writing prompts. You can participate on your terms\, writing only if you feel like it\, and as and when feels comfortable. \nThis session is open to both brain tumour patients and caregivers. \nAbout Andrew Kauffmann \nAndrew Kauffmann is a coach and a tutor of therapeutic writing. The Centre for Mental Health’s 2024 Writer in Residence\, he has lived with a health condition for over 20 years. A kidney donor\, and a campaigner with extensive experience working for health and care charities such as Age UK\, Macmillan Cancer Support and Royal National Institute of Blind People\, he has recently run writing workshops for members of Carers UK\, Renal Arts Group and Kidney Care UK. He delivers writing workshops for members of brainstrust\, a UK based brain tumour charity. \nElsewhere\, he’s led workshops on writing challenging material for The Literary Consultancy and The Write Salon. He has completed a CPD-accredited introduction to Therapeutic and Reflective Writing with The Professional Writing Academy\, and undergone training with the Institute for Narrative Therapy on turning life events into stories. The festival atmosphere is electric and running for charity at this event is truly special.  Registration for this stunning coastal half closes on 14th September 2026. \n \n  \n  \n
